[Home][FAQ][ Hurricane Risk?]

We avoid hurricanes by going south and east of the hurricane belt.

Hurricanes are of course a serious risk in the Caribbean, but not in our area because we have carefully arranged our annual itinerary to avoid them. So the risk for you is very small and the worst that can happen is an inconvenient interruption of your vacation. If this should happen, we will get you to a dock at the nearest airport and waive the unused portion of your costs. Here is why we are so sure there is very little risk.

Hurricane season for this area is June through November. Our insurance company requires that we be below 16 N. latitude during this period, because hurricanes seldom travel below this latitude in this area. As you can see from our itinerary we meet that requirement. Furthermore we arrange our itinerary so that we are in the Windward Islands during the whole season. Most hurricanes form after they pass west of 61 deg. West longitude so this means that the Windward Islands usually only experience the tropical wave (mild) that later allows the hurricane to form over the warmer gulf waters west of there. Most storms do not become "named" untill after they pass west of the Windward Islands. Moreover, the peak of the hurricane season when most hurricanes occur is August and September. To further insure our safety, during this peak time we stay in Tobago, Trinidad, and along the Venezuelan coast where the latitude is about 11 degrees N. In the last 100 years only a few hurricanes have come near this southern area. The chances of this happening on your vacation are extremely small. You can check out the historical hurricane tracks for yourself. Also look at the discussion about summer vacations in How Is The Weather?

However, strange weather can occur even when it is very unlikely. So it is important that you realize that even if the very unlikely occurs, you and your family are only at risk of inconvenience not at risk of harm. Hurricanes are very slow moving, about 15 KTs. Furthermore, the forecasting is quite accurate. So we will know well in advance if we are within the forecast "cone" and we will take you to a dock at the nearest airport so you can fly to safety. In this case we will help minimize your inconvenience by waiving the unused portion of your share of the cost to help defer any added cost for you.
